Behr Team Members Support Students through Work with Diversity Nonprofit
In 2023, Behr Paint Company was proud to continue its support for the Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA), which works to build a healthier and stronger community by enhancing the well-being of Asians and Pacific Islanders through inclusive partnerships in the areas of service, education, advocacy, organizing, and research.
In addition to Behr’s financial support for the nonprofit, this year several Behr team members gave their time through participation in various OCAPICA events.
In April, a group of Behr volunteers spent time mulching, harvesting and planting seeds at the Magnolia Agriscience Community Center, an urban agricultural farm built on the Magnolia High School campus in Anaheim. With support from OCAPICA, the garden strives to educate students, families, and the community about sustainable agricultural practices, nourishment, and community building, and is located in a part of Anaheim that’s known as a “food desert”, with a lack of stores selling healthy foods.
Additionally, in November, two members of Behr’s Talent Acquisition team volunteered at Gilbert High School in Anaheim to teach an Interviewing Skills workshop that was sponsored by OCAPICA as part of the ROOTED Program. Carmen Chen and Stefanie Burris shared practical insights on interviewing in the workplace and guided students through several role play practice sessions.
Carmen, speaking about the session said, “I truly believe in the transformative power of education and wanted to contribute to bridging the opportunity gap. Personally, it has been immensely rewarding to support the students’ growth and play a small part in shaping their futures. Professionally, this experience has honed my public speaking and leadership skills. Volunteering during work hours not only lets me make a positive impact on the community but also brings me pride in knowing that my employer supports and encourages such initiatives.”
Stefanie said, “As a Talent Acquisition Specialist, I have been the interviewer countless times. I felt that it would be insightful to share what the interviewers are looking for in a candidate. I also love that this was at a continuation school where many students are actually or are currently looking for a job. It brings me joy that I was able to help prepare them for their success.”
