Masco Helps Foster “Exceptional” Cybersecurity Talent

Masco is proud to support Exceptional Academy, a cybersecurity certification program that aims to provide advanced work skills training in high demand by Metropolitan Detroit companies to adults with disabilities, as well as to raise awareness and educate area companies in the many advantages of working with adults with disabilities.

Founded in 2019 as a joint effort by Masco HQ’s nonprofit partner the Living and Learning Enrichment Center, Cisco Networking Academy, Michigan Career & Technical Institute and Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Exceptional Academy is the first program of its kind in Michigan and only the second in the entire country, modeled after a program completed successfully in New York City.

Masco stepped up as the first corporate partner of Exceptional Academy and continues to support each year, including the program’s third and current cohort. This past fall, students and instructors of the Academy spoke to over 100 of our HQ employees about the impact the program was having in their lives and the importance of tailoring teaching styles to reach neurodiverse talent.

David Franco, Director of Exceptional Academy, says, “Masco has been a valued sponsor of the Exceptional Academy every year since our inception in the fall of 2019. This year, they are expanding their involvement with the Academy with their Director of Enterprise Security serving on our IT Executive Advisory Board. We are very grateful for the entire team at Masco for all they have done to help raise awareness and improve the lives of area adults with disabilities.”

We are excited to help enable Exceptional Academy’s mission to make Michigan’s workplaces stronger and more inclusive of all backgrounds!

Students Learn about STEM Careers at Masco

In October, Masco hosted students from Detroit-based Central High School for a day to learn about some unique careers as part of our nonprofit partner Life Remodeled’s “Career Visioning Field Trips.” First touring our Flight Operations office, the students saw the airplane hangar and heard about the variety of job paths available in aviation. Then, at Masco Research & Development, they met with our scientists who explained how they test our products for safety and durability by using their expertise in chemistry, metallurgy, microbiology and more. Future Engineers Tour Mercury Plastics

This summer, Mercury Plastics continued its support for University of Akron programs aimed at increasing minority enrollment in their engineering school. In June, the university’s Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) hosted a week-long Summer Experience in Engineering Camp for 23 students entering grades 9-12. From tours to local engineering firms to hands-on projects, along with social activities, the camp offered valuable experiences for high school students interested in learning more about aerospace systems, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, corrosion, electrical and mechanical engineering.
