Masco Volunteers at Financial Literacy Camp
In late June, members of the Masco Finance and IT teams volunteered with nonprofit Detroit Impact on the first day of their Young Investor Summer Camp, part of the Money Matters for Youth program. The program’s mission is to teach children of all ages the fundamentals of economics and financial responsibility, with all camp activities designed to promote financial literacy and awareness.
The Masco volunteers assisted with the camp’s “Adulting” activity, also known as the Reality Store. During this activity, elementary, middle, and high school students were each assigned a profession, family size, and monthly salary. Volunteers guided each student through managing one month of expenses based on these factors, helping them choose their health insurance, type of home, transportation, and related insurances, as well as budgeting for utilities, phone, internet, groceries, and other essentials. Additionally, each student received a random “reality check” to navigate: some enjoyed a tax refund that boosted their monthly income, while others faced unexpected expenses like car repairs or medical bills for sick children.
“We had a blast working with the kids. It was incredibly rewarding to engage with them and witness many of them discovering for the first time how monthly expenses operate and how a person’s profession can significantly impact their monthly income,” said Kaity Neville, Sr. Treasury Technical Analyst at Masco HQ.
Thanks to the Finance and IT volunteers for helping ensure financial success for the next generation!
