“Seedlings” Helps Literacy Grow

Masco is pleased to continue supporting a very special organization in 2021. Seedlings Braille Books for Children, located in Masco World Headquarters’ hometown of Livonia, MI, is dedicated to increasing the opportunity for literacy by providing high-quality, free and low-cost Braille books to children who are blind or have low vision.

Books produced in Braille are significantly more expensive than regular books, sometimes costing up to $100 for a single book. Seedlings relies on 50 volunteers to help produce books that are much more affordable for families. Through their Book Angel program, every child in the US ages 0-21 who is blind or has low vision is eligible to receive three free Braille books of their choice each year upon request, and Seedlings sells subsequent books at an average of $10/book. In 2020, Seedlings provided over 7,300 books through their Book Angel program!

Masco has sponsored Seedlings for the last three years. Our 2021 donation of $5,000 will allow Seedlings’ Book Angel program to gift 167 children with 3 free books each, increasing critical access to Braille from a young age to help kids in the blind and low-vision community develop the literacy skills they need for success in school and in life.

This year, Masco is partnering with the Detroit news station WDIV to broadcast a special series in Masco World Headquarters’ home region of Southeast Michigan. Through televised segments airing weekly on WDIV Detroit, the year-long series, called Go 4 It, is celebrating good news by shining a spotlight on the philanthropic impact made by nonprofit organizations, corporations, and individuals. Students Learn about STEM Careers at Masco

In October, Masco hosted students from Detroit-based Central High School for a day to learn about some unique careers as part of our nonprofit partner Life Remodeled’s “Career Visioning Field Trips.” First touring our Flight Operations office, the students saw the airplane hangar and heard about the variety of job paths available in aviation. Then, at Masco Research & Development, they met with our scientists who explained how they test our products for safety and durability by using their expertise in chemistry, metallurgy, microbiology and more. Behr Paint Employees Learn About Backyard Wildlife

Masco is proud to support the National Wildlife Federation, the USA’s largest private, nonprofit conservation education and advocacy organization. Through hands-on habitat protection, restoration, and management; policy work; community outreach and more, the National Wildlife Federation works each day to build a better future for both people and wildlife.
