Masco Grows Vegetables for Housing Partner

Despite continuing to work remotely, a few dedicated employees from Brasscraft Manufacturing Company and Masco HQ volunteered to make sure the Masco Community Garden still got off the ground this summer to grow fresh produce for Mercy House, one of our nonprofit partners in the emergency housing space. This will be the Masco Community Garden’s third year growing outside our Livonia, MI, headquarters; while we’re focusing on squash and tomatoes this year to keep maintenance and harvesting easy for our tiny crew of volunteers, the garden has previously grown herbs, beans, melons and more.

Mercy House has been a Masco partner in the housing space since 2016. Founded by a member of Masco HQ’s Legal Department as part of the Michigan Itinerant Shelter System Interdependent Out of Necessity (MISSION), Mercy House serves the nearby Washtenaw County community to provide emergency housing, human services, and food stability to the region’s homeless population. In addition to supporting Mercy House through food donations, Masco HQ has an annual holiday collection for the organization and sponsors a program that allows MISSION to secure temporary housing for students and families in the Ann Arbor Public School District.

In February, Masco nonprofit partner Fisher House held a ceremony to celebrate the “topping off” of their new Detroit location and the 99th Fisher House in the U.S. With plans to open its doors to military families this fall, supporters gathered to witness a milestone in the construction timeline: the placing of the final beam in the structure. Masco Helps Welcomes New Refugee Neighbors to Southeast MI

In 2023, Masco partnered with the nonprofit Samaritas and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Plymouth, Michigan, to turn a vacant colonial house on the St. John’s property into a home for resettling refugee families coming to the Great Lakes State. With capacity to fit up to eight people, the home will serve one family at a time; when the residing family is on their feet and ready to move into their own place, another refugee family in need will take over occupancy of the Plymouth house.
